Event Notes:

Benita Willis - Australian 5km Road Record Holder

Benita Willis will go down in history as one of Australia's top female road athletes. Willis holds the Australian record for the women's 5km (14:59), 10km (31:17) and Marathon (2:22.36) and is also ranked no.2 in the half marathon (67:55) - behind Kerryn McCann's Australian record of 67:48.

Although not quite matching the all-round excellence on the road from Willis, Susie Power can also lay claim to being one of Australia's top road runners. Power has also broken 68 minutes for the half marathon (67:56 in 2002) and has run 15:15 for 5km, 31:50 for 10km, 48:37 for 15km and ranks 3rd on the Australian all-time list for 10 miles (52:52, also recorded in 2002).

Prior to the record breaking performances from Willis, the no.1 road runner was certainly Lisa Ondieki. She held the Australian marathon record from 1988 through to 2006, after winning the Osaka marathon in 2:23.51. Ondieki also held the Australian half marathon record from 1986 through to 1999 (69:39). In fact Ondieki still holds one Australian road record, the women's 10 mile, a record she has held since 1987 when she won in Washington, USA in 52:23.

In fact Ondieki actually held the 10 mile world record for 2 years (1987-1989), until Cathy O'Brien of the United States ran 51:47 on the 26th August, 1989. The current world record for the event is held by the great Sonia O'Sullivan (51:00 in 2002, the year Susie Power came 2nd in 52:52).
