World Junior Leading Performances in Melbourne
What a great way to conclude the 90th edition of the Australian Championships, a dominant display from one of our up and coming stars of the sport - Steve Solomon.
After such an interrupted start to the 2011/12 domestic season, Solomon has simply gone from strength to strength over the past three months - culminating in his second National 400m title and a new PB of 45.54s. His powerful one lap performance in the final event of the Championships moved Solomon to no.1 on the 2012 World Junior ranking list, and moves the 18 year-old up one spot on the Australian all-time ranking list to 19th.

With the National Championships still two weeks away it was the likes of Jake Stein and Claire Tallent who provided the highlights in both Australia and overseas over the past three days. Stein, 18, produced yet another Australian record, this time improving his own Australian U/20 record in the decathlon to a very impressive 7886 points. While over in China Tallent placed 5th in the 20km walk at the IAAF World Challenge, equally impressive with a new personal best of 1:28.53 - smashing her previous PB which had stood since 2010 (1:32.02).

Between the 10th and 15th July close to 60 Australian junior athletes will be in Barcelona, Spain to compete in the 14th IAAF World Junior Championships. At the very first World Junior Championships, held in Athens, Greece in 1986, Australia took home three medals - including a gold from junior 400m star, Miles Murphy (45.64s). Since then Australia has won 10 gold medals, which has included the magical 400m/400m hurdles double in 2000 from Jana Pittman and Dani Samuels (discus) and Robbie Crowther (long jump) both winning gold in 2006 in Beijing, China.
