Event Notes:
Patrick Johnson - Australian 100m Record Holder
The oldest Australian men's track records are held by Peter Norman (200m - 20.06sec in 1968) and Ralph Doubell (800m - 1:44.40 in 1968). Norman won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Mexico City when breaking the 200m record, while Doubell won the gold medal at the same Olympics - and in the process also broke the world record.
Ryan Gregson is one of the youngest record holders (only 20y3m), recently breaking the 1500m record in Monaco (3:31.06), breaking Simon Doyles's previous record from 1991 of 3:31.96 - set in Stockholm.
While Gregson has many years ahead of him to achieve greatness, Ron Clarke has already achieved such accolades. Clarke was one of the worlds top athletes throughout the 1960's, and was actually awarded the Track and Field athlete of the year in 1965 (awarded by a select panel of experts via Track and Field News). Clarke won a bronze medal over 10000m at the 1964 Olympics, but was struck down with altitude sickness at the 1968 Mexico Games and finished 6th in the 10000m - and as a result suffered permanent heart damage.
Clarke held the 10000m World Record from 1963 to 1972. Amazingly during a 44-day European tour in 1965, he competed 18 times and broke 12 world records, including the 20,000 m (12.4 miles). He lowered his own 10,000m world record by 39 seconds to become the first man to break the 28 minute barrier, running a 27:39.4.
- Ryan Gregson - broke the long standing Australian Open 1500m record previously held by Simon Doyle back in 1991. Gregson ran 3:31.06 in Monaco in July to shave .90sec from the existing record, and now holds the Open, U/20 and U/18 Australian records.
- Lachlan Renshaw - broke the Australian Open 600m record held by John Hingham. Renshaw produced a 1.15.14 performance in Sydney in February.
- The team of Collis Birmingham, Sean Wroe, Ryan Gregson and Jeff Riseley also set an Australian Best time in the rarely run distance medley relay. At the Penn Relays in April the Australian team ran 9.26.61, with Birmingham running 2.54.88 (1200m), Wroe 44.82sec (400m), Gregson 1.47.28 (800m) and Riseley 3.59.63 (1600m).
