Event Notes:

Rob de Castella - Marathon Record Holder

In 1983 Rob de Castella became Australia's first World Champion, taking out the men's marathon in Helsinki in a time of 2:10.03. He then went onto place 5th at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and four years later placed 8th at the Seoul Olympics.

When de Castella was coming to the end of his career (he retired in 1993) Australia was fortunate enough to have another champion distance runner take to the road, Steve Moneghetti. Although Moneghetti couldn't quite break the Australian marathon record of 2:07.51, set by de Castella in the Boston marathon in 1986, he did manage to break 61:00 on three occasions in the half marathon and finished his career with a personal best of 2:08.16 for the marathon when winning in Berlin in 1990.

Note: Moneghetti recently ran a world record for the 45-49 age group over 15km (46:08 in June, 2010 - Ballarat), only to have the record broken one month later by Mbarek Hussein of the United States (45:56).

Australia has had great success over the years in the men's marathon, with four Australian athletes ending the year ranked no.1 on the world ranking lists since 1960. The athletes are:

  • Steve Moneghetti - 1990 - 2:08:16
  • Rob deCastella - 1986 - 2:07:51a
  • Rob deCastella - 1983 - 2:08:37
  • Rob deCastella - 1981 - 2:08:18
  • John Farrington - 1973 - 2:11:12.6
  • Derek Clayton - 1971 - 2:11:08.8
  • Derek Clayton - 1967 - 2:09:36.4
  • Apart from the great success enjoyed by deCastella and Moneghetti, there have since been stars such as Craig Mottram (5km in 13:20, 10km in 27:54) and Darren Wilson (10km in 28:11 and Half Marathon in 60:06).
