Event Notes:
(above) Georgie Clarke
- was only 16 when she ran in the 1500m at the 2000 Sydney Olympics
When you look through the junior all-time rankings you soon understand just how many Australian athletes starred as juniors. When you look at the likes of Darren Clark, Paul Byrne, Ryan Gregson, Raelene Boyle, Georgie Clarke, Cathy Freeman and Jana Rawlinson - just to name a few - you start to see just how many junior stars we have had over the past 40 years
An athlete such as Georgie Clarke dominates the ranking lists for both the 800m and 1500m, while Paul Byrne's Australian junior 800m record is an amazing 1.04 seconds faster than the no.2 ranked Australian junior. Then you have an athlete such as Ralene Boyle who was winning Olympic medals as a junior athlete - winning Olympic silver at the 1968 Mexcico City Games, while also placing 4th in the 100m.
Darren Clark also represented Australia as a junior at an Olympic Games, placing 4th in Los Angeles in 1984 over the 400m, while also leading Australia to a 4th placing in the 4x400m relay.
The most recent junior star is Ryan Gregson, who now holds the Australian 1500m open record of 3.31.06, producing the record performance as a 20 year-old. Prior to breaking the open record Gregson broke the long standing junior 1500m record held by Mike Hillardt - 3.39.67 set way back in 1980. He not only broke the record, he smashed it, recording a time of 3.37.24 at the 2009 Sydney Track Classic.
Although there wasn't a large number of Australian junior records broken in 2010, the records that were broken were of high quality.
In total seven (7) records were equalled or broken throughout 2010 - four U/20, two U/18 records and an U/16 record. Leading the way was Liz Parnov who equalled both the U/18 and U/20 women's pole vault record of 4.40m, which was actually held by her sister Vicky Parnov. Liz also took away a silver medal from the Youth Olympics in Singapore while also representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi - rounding out a fantastic year for the junior pole vault star.
Other records to be broken were as follows:

I think Duer Yoa was still U20 when he ran 8.07.10 in Christchurch on the same night as Ryan Gregson in NZ. Duers DOB was 26/12/89'which would have made him 19 and 3months. Great site!

Great site!
In terms of rankings if an athlete is turning 20 in the year of the performance then they can not be classed as a junior athlete, and therefore you will find Duer turned 20 in December 2009 and the 8.07.10 was also achieved in 2009.
This is also the case for National records, although you will find that State records are different – where an athlete only has to be 19 at the time of the performance to break an existing U/20 State record.
PS. Thanks for the kind words regarding the site – we have invested many hours into the site so we hope you like it!
Hi Chris,
Fantastic job with the stats.
I’ve got a couple of additions for you in the Junior Mens 1500m. According to the WA State records, Herb Elliott ran 3.45.0h and is still the under 20 state record. Steve Stingemore Snr ran 3.47.9h for the WA all comers under 20 record. I’m not sure of the exact years though.
Recently Sam McEntee (on 19/11/10) ran 3.47.67 to break the all comers record. Date of birth is 3/2/92
Cheers
Gareth
Hi Chris,
Love what you have done with the stats.
I just wanted to give you an update on a couple of 1500m athletes for your rankings.
According to the WA state records. Herb Elliott ran 3.45.0h and the state all comers record in held by Steve Stingemore Snr 3.47.9h. Im not sure of the years either. Sam McEntee broke the all comers record on Nov 16 2010 and ran 3.47.67. His DOB is 3/2/92
Also, Kieran King from WA ran a pretty fast 400m when he was 16. Im pretty sure it would fit into your rankings
Keep up the good work
Gareth
Hi Chris
Thanks for what you are doing to keep athletics alive. My daughter Lauren McKillop did a 9.36.77 in the 3000m at Sydney on 7 March 2009. She was competing in the U/20s with her date of birth being 17.12.1990.
She is trying to keep her dream alive and is on scholarship in the US. She’s had a spate of injuries from mid last year to early this year but is well on the road to recovery. Hopefully injuries won’t get the better of her like so many names on your list, and she can continue her progression on the athletic scene.
